For as far back as he can remember, Jake has always had trouble sleeping, and this is due to the vivid and often startling dreams he experiences when resting. Even in his childhood, this lack of sleep caused him great frustration which often manifested itself as aggression and he was consequently sent to psychiatric counseling. In the counseling sessions, he was given meditation excercises, during which he found his dreams returned and it was discovered that the images he saw were more than just dreams, they were happening in the homes and on the streets of Madrid.

Jacob Foley (Jake) was an orphan boy of 8 when he was adopted by the Fernandez family. They were warm and loving people who provided him with a happy home and sent him to a good school. Despite this, Jake was a troubled, he had difficulty inside the classroom and frequently got into fights. Aged 10, he burned the school caretaker's shed to the ground and was sent for psychiatric counseling. It was during these counseling sessions it was revealed that he was a mutant.

His teen years were riddled with minor criminal offenses such as petty theft and antisocial behaviour. Although he was supported by his family, in whom the mutant gene was prevalent, Jake struggled to come to terms with his abnormality; terrible nightmares and visions kept him awake at night, and his frustration turned into violence. Then one night, aged 16, a drunken joy ride in a stolen car turned tragic when the driver lost control of the vehicle and slammed it into a tree. Only Jake survived the collision.

He served six months in a juvenile penitentiary, where he turned 17, and by the time he was released, Jacob was a different person. He was quiet and introverted. He spent all his free time locked in his bedroom, preferring to sleep to shut out the things in his head. He left home when he was 19 and took his first job working at a gas station, but he was sacked following a bloody confrontation with one of his old cellmates. He struggled to keep employment thereafter, until he was invited to live with his sister, Anna, who had just bought a house of her own in California. He moved into the attic and contributed to the running of the house as a home for troubled mutant teens.

In 2009, Jake and fellow housemate, Aidan Fox, confronted local gang, the Tres Onces, after they had abducted two of the young residents of Redención House, Aimee Connors and Jim Lewinski. The confrontation ended in a devastating blaze which consumed the entire warehouse and resulted in several deaths. Fortunately, no-one from Redención House was harmed. Shortly afterwards, their home was damaged beyond repair during the Los Santos Registration Riots, and the residents were re-homed. Jake, however, was wanted for questioning in connection with the warehouse fire and fled to Nevada, where he was provided refuge by the Brotherhood of Mutants.

Powers

Until recently, Jake had very little control over his gifts. He could read minds well enough, but he couldn't shut out the persistent drone of the thoughts of those around him. His visions haunted his sleep every night, and sometimes during the day: visions of suffering and death. It was with the help of his friend, Aidan Fox, that Jake has been able to make his condition more manageable, and using the same control techniques, he has since broadened his arsenal of abilities. No longer can he only read minds, but he can also influence them, too.

Since his flight to Nevada, Jake has abandoned his sense of ethical restraint in favour of a more practical and experimental approach to the use of his gifts. And, just like a muscle, the more he uses his mind, the stronger it becomes.
