Vek Vek sat at the bar, nursing his drink. Gin. neat. The bartender had given him a funny look, but the Durwi had no aversion to administering unpleasant-tasting medicine if it would treat the disease, or at least the symptoms.

    Time of death, 11:02.

It was how his shift had ended. The Chadra Fan hadn't been shot, stabbed, immolated, or exposed to deadly radiation as were the common health hazards in deep space. He'd simply had the most Chadra Fan of conditions - a heart attack. By the time he'd been rushed to the infirmary, there was little Doctor Vek could have done to help him, but that didn't stop him from trying.

Vek sipped his gin. He stayed on that moment, a stop and rewind affair of him checking for a pulse, ordering the application of shock. Something to buy him time to detect the precise cardiac defect to attack. Not enough time. The Chadra Fan had been old, and the diminuitive species weren't in the habit of living long anyways. Nevertheless, even the routine deaths were still deaths.

It didn't help to dwell on the fact that he'd died on the threshold of a new year. Of course, that made little difference, but everyone saw the changing of a calendar as an opportunity to begin again to some sense. The New Year marked time. If Vek had been a little faster, or the people delivering the man to him had been, maybe that Chadra Fan would have another year to reflect upon.

He drank alone for now. He wasn't avoiding the company, nor was he seeking it out. This was simply a matter of administering dosage.
