Thread: SW-Fans Into Darkness

We could perhaps be one of those fired-upon ships, on one singular occasion... but anything much more than that stretches credibility a little, IMO.

There's enough room for a Klingon story or two, but it's not enough to hang the entire focus of our storytelling on it.

Plus we've got a lot of the smaller bad guys we could get into the mix with, like the Tholians, Breen, Kzinti, etc

You should do time traveling Klingons from the mirror universe.

oh what a tangled web I weave

    Pssh. Don't be silly.

Time traveling Klingons from the Mirror Universe doing the bidding of their humpback whale overlords! To combat them, Future Guy dispatches the Borg-revived corpse of Wesley Crusher aboard the Defiant retrofitted with mechanical Batman armor, crewed by the super-evolved offspring of Captain Janeway and Tom Paris from that episode where they broke Warp 10 and turned into salamanders.

I... I think I need to lie down now.

EDIT: To get back on track, I'm going to hold off on putting up new ideas until we're at least well underway in our first thread. I'm eager to see which part of the "where no one has gone before" we get to go to!

Charley mentioned the other day that using Memory Alpha for research is problematic, because you can easily spoiler yourself for stuff that you haven't watched yet. Also, I've been finding it tricky to unravel what information is and isn't still valid in the Abrams Universe.

To make life easier, I've started creating a little wiki. It's not going to be a full-blown thing: more like a "roleplaying sourcebook", that focuses more on need-to-know information for writing about characters, and not so much about the nitty-gritty of historical events and such. The first page I've written, about Starfleet, has a heavy focus on stuff like how the Academy works and what uniforms you should be wearing on what occasions... the actual history part distils almost 200 years down into four paragraphs.

There'll be a lot of red links for a while, so please bear with that. Also, if there's anything specific you need info on (aside from the obvious stuff like alien races/etc), let me know so I can focus on that.

For people still waiting around and unable to post, When Vulcan Fell is a short little thread thing to cover off what people are doing during the first movie, why you didn't fly off to Vulcan and get waporised, and so on.

It's not meant to be a long thread or anything... just something to help stop our momentum/enthusiasm from stalling out. I already know what a few people have in mind, so if you wanna write something lemmie know so I can coordinate things and stuffs and such.

Actually part of that incident is why Bianca didn't get promoted, so I'll bang something out soon.

Since we've got all the main characters / players / etc more or less situated, we're in a good position for people to start picking up second/third/fourth characters if they choose to. This might be particularly useful if your character has a role that would keep them on the ship a lot (helmsman, doctor, engineer), and you want to make sure that you've got a character who can go on away missions more readily, or if you just want to have a crack at playing a quirky alien. Also, bonus characters will give us that Star Trek sense of having familiar characters in the background - if you're eagle-eyed, you'll probably have noticed that quite a lot of the background/supporting actors from Star Trek were also in Star Trek Into Darkness.

You'll notice quite a few bonus characters from me appearing over the next couple of days. Try not to worry: this is mostly me setting up / establishing characters who are going to have a part to play in our next few adventures.

    * * *

    Some suggestions!

    Bridge Officers
    • Communications Officer (LT) - there are two chairs at COMMs; will also cover for Thaitla while she's off-ship
    • Navigator and/or Helmsman (LT) - to cover for Jorann and/or McKenna if needed; perhaps Kal Penn (Harold & Kumar reference)?
    • Transporter Chief (LT) - expert on operating, maintaining, and trouble-shooting transporters
    • Engineering Officer (LT) - degree-level knowledge of warp physics, engineering, etc
    • Ensigns... - mechanics, technicians, electricians, assistants, damage control, IT guys, etc

    Science Officers
    • Astrophysics Officer (LT) - the science of space: gravity, stars, black holes, etc
    • Exobiology Officer (LT) - aka. astrobiology, xenobiology: the study of biological stuff from other planets
    • Geology Officer (LT) - rocks, plate tectonics, stopping volcanoes from erupting, etc
    • Meteorology Officer (LT) - space weatherman... also useful for mapping clouds in gas giants, etc
    • Paleontology Officer (LT) - digs up space dinosaurs, and other ancient/dead alien stuff
    • Xenobotany Officer (LT) - aka. astrobotany: the study of alien plants
    • Ensigns... - lab technicians, research assistants, interns, etc

    Medical Officers
    • Pathologist (LT) - like a xenobiology officer, but they specialise in microbes and diseases; does lab work for the medical staff
    • Pharmacologist (LT) - a biochemist; synthesises medications, manages the ship's medical stores
    • Nurse (LT) - three years of nurse training at Starfleet Academy
    • Ensigns... - lab technicians, orderlies, etc

    Administrative Officers
    • Requisitions Officer (Ens/LT) - looks after ship's stores, handles requisitions; the "quartermaster" in the army sense of the term
    • Captain's Yeoman (Ens/LT) - the captain's PA / secretary / bearer of clipboards; perhaps a man, to break with Trek tradition?
    • Ship's Historian (LT) - studied history; librarian for the ship's historical archives, etc

It's like that, and that's the way it is.

Does anyone else want to contribute to the When Vulcan Fell thread during the "the night before" stage of proceedings? If not, I'll move things on to the morning.

    For reference -

    • Day 0, Evening: Uhura receives the message; Kirk gets it on with Galia
    • NIGHT
    • Day 1, Morning: Kirk takes the Kobayashi Maru test
    • Day 1, Afternoon: Academic hearing re: Kirk's cheating; distress call from Vulcan
    • Day 1, Evening: Ships launch for Vulcan, and are destroyed
    • NIGHT
    • Day 2, Morning: Kirk sneaks back aboard the Enterprise
    • Day 2, Afternoon: Nero attacks Earth
    • Day 2, Evening: A tug is sent to retrieve the Enterprise and tow her back to Earth

And yeah: believe it or not, the first movie does actually have that quick a turn-around.

To boldly go where no one-- Oh, look, we're already there!

I'll go ahead and post after I get back from dinner. I want to set Jorann up for his incident tomorrow that leads to his grounding.

I was gonna do more that night but I think I like it better if I progress to the next day anyway

I'm probably gonna cobble together accounts for my Andorian junior engineer guy and Reggie's Vulcan buddy, so I'll get those up this weekend
