Production has begun on Star Wars Rebels, an exciting, all-new animated television series based on one of the greatest entertainment franchises of all time. Scheduled to premiere in fall 2014 as a one-hour special telecast on Disney Channel, it will be followed by a series on Disney XD channels around the world.

The action-filled series is set between the events of Episode III and IV -- an era spanning almost two decades never-before explored on-screen. Star Wars Rebels takes place in a time where the Empire is securing its grip on the galaxy and hunting down the last of the Jedi Knights as a fledgling rebellion against the Empire is taking shape. Details about the show are a closely guarded secret at this point.

I hadn't heard about this but Disney is making a new CG animation series, set between Ep III and Ep IV. Here's a blurb about it.

"Four short-form interstitials will release in Summer 2014, introducing viewers to the characters of Star Wars Rebels. In Fall 2014, a one-hour debut special will air on Disney Channel and Disney XD, followed by the series rollout on Disney XD.

Under the supervision of Executive Producers Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Avatar: The Last Airbender), Simon Kinberg (X-Men: First Class, Sherlock Holmes, Mr. & Mrs. Smith) and Greg Weisman (Young Justice, The Spectacular Spider-Man, Gargoyles), Star Wars Rebels boasts the talents of the production team that brought us the hugely successful and Emmy winning Star Wars: The Clone Wars series.

Star Wars Rebels will have A-level company-wide marketing in Summer/Fall 2014, as well as a huge push across consumer product divisions, including digital, electronics, toys, apparel, stationery, and home furnishings."

Hopefully Asoka will be in it. Also, hopefully I'll watch The Clone Wars season 2 and beyond before fall 2014. No promises! (Wait, is it on Netflix?)

The Jedi will rise? So together with the hints from Dave Filloni at Celebration Europe I think it is save to asume that Ahsoka will be back in this one and hopefully "Badass Bounty Hunter" Ventress as well.

Those vids link to character intros for Kanan (the Captain), Ezra (the kid sidekick), and Chopper (the grumpy droid) as well. If you've not watched those you should, because it's a pretty good insight into what the show is going to be about/like!

Seems that basically they're doing a small crew-focused story: more like the original trilogy and it's focus on the Falcon and the people in it, as opposed to the broad-reaching political story of Clone Wars. There's a retired Jedi captain, a force sensitive / tech savvy street kid, an astromech that they describe as a grumpy cat... and it looks like there's a lady in the voice recording shots, though I haven't spotted a character profile for them yet.

Basically, it seems like they're doing something very different: it's not just Clone Wars ten years on, it's a much more zoomed in story with a much smaller cast of characters. ...which is cool, they're not just using Rebels as an opportunity to dodge the contract with Cartoon Network, they're using it as an opportunity to do something new/different with it.
