    Movies What are you watching?

On TV, DVD, blu-ray, Netflix, Youtube... wherever it happens to be.

    Watch anything good lately?

Just watched "Tomorrow, When the War Began," again. I really like that movie. =)

Also been cycling through old episodes of Top Gear as I've been drawing.

Saw an early screening of Starsa film scheduled for later this year. About guy who just lost his wife (and unborn kid) during childbirth. He's suicidal and is planning on throwing himself off the Rio Grande Gorge bridge on his next birthday.

On the road trip to get there, he has different adventures that make him rethink his decision that life isn't worth living.

Balances comedy and tragedy very well. I recommend it whenever it comes out.

    Battleship.

As in the movie "based on the board game".

Surprisingly enjoyable. The plot is pretty simple, but the action scenes are cool, the visual effects are awesome, and there were quite a few bits that genuinely made me laugh. There's one obvious scene that emulates the board game, and it actually ended up being pretty cool rather than a cheese-fest.

Imagine if Michael Bay directed a two-hour big budget recruiting video for the US Navy... that's pretty much what it is.
It's like that, and that's the way it is.

I really enjoyed Battleship. I read a review where it was compared to Michael Bay's Pearl Harbor and deemed much, much, better.

I am in the middle of a rewatch of Jericho on Netflix. So, so good.

I watched a ton of Kitchen Nightmares, this weekend, until I was caught up. Then I moved on to Bar Rescue.

This year, at the BBC Proms, Daniel Barenboim conducts the West-Eastern Divan Orchestra in a full cycle of the Beethoven symphonies. Tonight is the first installment, featuring the first and second symphonies. The whole thing culminates on Friday next week with the 9th.

That sounds really awesome. The 3rd/5th/7th/9th would all be required viewing for me.

Third and Fourth tonight. What's interesting is that, between the symphonies, they play a piece by contemporary classical composer Pierre Boulez. Barenboim believed this would provide a stark and refreshing contrast to Beethoven's works, and in that he is so right. It's mental to hear, last night they performed Dérive II, part of which can be heard here, it's a veritable kaleidoscope of sounds. On Twitter, the BBC provided an excellent feed over the 45 minute course of the piece, helping Boulez laymen like me to unravel the techniques and tones of the music.

Grand Prix, last night, as part of the Academy's 70 MM Film Festival. Really amazing on the big screen with the full sound and all. Those race sequences really hold up.

Tonight is going to be awesome. I will be watching the opening ceremony for the Olympic Games, and I can't wait for that, but first I have the joy of Beethoven's 9th about to begin on Radio 3, broadcasting live from the Proms at the Royal Albert Hall. Tonight, life is good!

I need to know. What does "Proms" stand for? All it makes me think of are high school Prom, which is a school dance. Is it "Promotions"?

Can't wait for the Olympics, I'm going to be watching and watching and watching.

IN THE MEANTIME - Have you heard of or watched The Onion's Sex House? It is a parody of Big Brother-type reality shows and it... it... it's also descending into some sort of Kafkaesque nightmare.
