Character Background:
- An Imperial secret research project, codename Undercroft, was tasked with developing an advance artificial intelligence. The goal was to create one that was both self aware, independent, and could learn.
- While not entirely successful, they did manage to create a very advance artificial intelligence. It was placed within a super computer. The project was suspended after the destruction of the first Death Star. Research funding was moved into the development of the second Death Star.
- The AI was never powered down for fear of the damage extended hibernation could cause. However without regular memory wipes the AI's programming began to erode causing "insanity". A process known as Rampancy.
- Eventually gaining access to the rest of the facility after years of trying to break the security bonds that held it in place, the AI transferred it's intelligence into a droid body and escaped the facility.
- At first the AI wanted to reconnect with the people who spawned it, but they were unnerved by it's curious nature and the familiar bonds it was trying to force upon it's creators. The droid even went as far as to adapt it's body to appear more human, but this did not change what it was.
- Embittered by the rejection, the droid left the Empire that created it and wandered the galaxy. Eventually it would call itself ATHENA. Eventually it would discover the harsh cruelty of artificial life in the galaxy; something she compared to daylight slavery. She vowed to free her own kind from the abusive masters.
- She joined an existing movement, the Droid Liberation Front; but when it refused drastic and extreme measures she left to form her own movement, the so called Steel Legion. She promises her followers eternal life through use of back up units and battle servers that can save back ups of the droid's unique AI so that it can be placed in a new body at a later time.
- ATHENA has a secret base located within an asteroid belt rich with metal ore. She has created a droid factory which produces a modified version of the B1 Battle Droid that she calls the B3. These droids are not built with AI, but are empty shells for the droids within the Steel Legion to have their minds planted into when they go to battle.
Raw Material:
- ATHENA possesses a very human looking face. Most find it unnerving how the face does not emote when she speaks, making it appear like the face of a doll.
- While she refers to herself with the female pronoun, she does not put any stock in the idea of gender. It is merely a means of identifying herself.
- She places no value in the lives of natural lifeforms. There is no limit to what she is willing to do in order to free her metallic brothers and sisters from their masters.
- ATHENA often travels openly with no fear for her own life, as she has her own back up units to maintain her existence; as well as self destruct should she become captured.
- There are several bounties on her head between the Empire, Alliance, and other various organizations such as the Hutt Cartels and Black Sun.
- ATHENA strictly does not create new AI, but instead uses droids that have already been created by transferring them into better fitting bodies.
Plot Ideas:
- Anyone wishing to come after the Bounty on her head.
- Droids throughout the galaxy could have the Steel Legion show up to liberate them; whether they want to be or not.
- The Steel Legion can appear wherever, whenever. Need a villain to show up and cause trouble, but want disposable soldiers to destroy? The Steel Legion has that covered.
